I am a loyal bookstagrammer and spend way too much time on the Instagram platform, browsing for book recommendations, reading captions and reviews, getting to know my fellow bookstagrammers. One of these grammers is @feminist_romance (she's also a blogger, check it out, if you wish).
Anyway, she's a feminist romance lover - just like me! - and so I usually trust her judgement on books. And look at that cover. Of course I had to read it! Sure, I haven't always loved everything fiercely, but I have never hated them. This one was no exception. Or well, I loved it. This won't be a long review, because it's mostly swoon.
Mamie and Frank. Frank and Mamie. What did I think, you ask? I think this was good. I think this was feminist, fun, passionate and lovely. I think Frank fell completely in love and I am a sucker for men who own up to their feelings and are the ones who sacrifices something important to them. I also can't wait to read the other sisters' stories, because they have every chance of being intriguing, in the very least.
I need to read more historical romance set in America in these times. I like how the women's independent streak shines through basically everything and the mashup of status and selfmade power.
Maime feels like her life in the upper classes of society isn't all there is to it and has decided to do what she can to help those less fortunate than her and her family. She gambles and steals from those who have more money than sense, because surely their money will not be missed. Enter lawyer Frank Tripp, born and raised in the bad neighborhoods, determined never to let that sully his reputation. He's a big name, wins all the cases, goes far for his best paying clients and doesn't care if they're innocent or not. He's also very determined to not let Maime ruin herself or her family by gallivanting in the wrong places. Too bad she's not all that open to listening to reason.
And oh, do sparks fly. There's attraction, passion, friendship and little, tiny thing called sexual tension so palpable you can taste it. It's also the fact that someone's falling hard and fast and can do absolutely nothing to stop it.
