My first read by Annika Martin was The Billionaire's Wake-up-call Girl (that's really a mouthful). I loved the dynamic between the characters, the Alpha billionaire, the fun, the passion, the heat. It's the same with this one. Let me tell you, Martin is fun and knows how to write dirty talk.
She also knows how to write a douchy dick hero and still make us love him. Because gah, how much of a douche Henry was in the beginning, like, I wanted to kick his balls in so bad. But then, oh, then. *le sigh* Redemption. But let's rewind:
Vicky is a true star in this book - she's smart, fierce, loyal and always tries to do the right thing. Raising her teenage sister by herself isn't all fun and roses, but she does it splendidly. But she went through a traumatizing event in her own teen years and fled the instability of her home with her sister, changed identities and has a really hard time trusting anyone. She reacts to things and words that others don't even reflect over. And she doesn't trust rich, entitled men. This is a case where therapy would have done wonders, I think. I suffered so with her and how she saw people around her as potential haters "if they only knew...".
Henry is, like I said, a complete asshat in the beginning. He's the CEO of the Cock, uhm, sorry, Locke companies, but not the major shareholder. The companies and the people employed by them are the most important thing to him. So, when his estranged mother leaves 51% of it all to her dog and accompanying dog-whisperer, who he thinks is a up-to-no-good grifter, he's none too pleased. And acts accordingly. (Which Vicky dropkicks back to him). But then he goes soft and sweet and loving and caring and uuugh, so sexy.
They fall in lust and then in love quite quickly and the obstacles were mostly in Vicky's brain, because Henry just went for it. He was like "Oh, I like her. But she's also the spawn of Satan, come to ruin my company. Eh, who cares, I'll make sweet love to her and carry the dog all the way to hell, if that's what it takes". So... Yeah. That's a point up in my book. And OMG how I died a bit about the bit with the wet finger, jeeeeez *laughing so hard*
I think Vicky was kiiind of hypocritical in the end there, but I guess it can be explained by her background. I did not like the ending, though. It wasn't bad, really, but it was... Unnecessary? Lacking?
Anyway, I recommend this book to every contemporary romance lover who wants to read about a cute Malteser and steamy make-out sessions in the elevator. Oh, and on the roof.
