I really shouldn't keep saying I don't like shifter/werewolf books. It's just getting awkward when I'm proven wrong...
This is another recommendation from the never-ending well that is Bookstagram and this time, it's the fabulous Romancebookjunkie, telling us to read this light paranormal romance. She, as well as I, is tired of the dark paranormals that have taken over the romance world. They have their place, but sometimes you just want to read something light and fluffy and hot. This is it!
For starters, both Mateo and Evie are lovable characters. Mateo is a sweet, artistic loner who has a dominate and possessive side without ever losing his sweetness. Alpha is also lovable, but in an entirely different way *smirking emoji*. Evie is smart, funny, geeky and compassionate and an all around nice gal with claws (how come the female characters seems to have more personality than male? Is this a think or do I just notice females more?).
Mateo thinks he's been hexed, since he hasn't been able to change form in three months. This is making his wolf, Alpha, take front row in his mind and is talking to him and making him basically loose his mind. Enter Evie, a super skilled hex-breaker. Even though she's reluctant to work with werewolves, because her older sister says not to trust such beings, she's a kind and sympathetic person who can't push away someone in need. Especially if that someone is a tall, hot piece of sweet gorgeousness. Who HASN'T SEEN STAR WARS (whaaaat)! (Okay, confession - I haven't seen all the older ones *hides under the table*. I will, okay! I'm saving them for when I can watch them without kids or a husband getting in my way). Evie spoke to me on a personal level. She's an artist, proud of herself and still self-conscious about things. I also love the fact that she's not afraid of her sexuality and that she struggles with her attraction just as much as Mateo (this should be a given, but it isn't always like this. Modern romance to all!)
The story revolves mostly around Mateo and Evies' growing friendship and attraction. There's not many obstacles, there's not big bad wolf (unless you want there to be *smirk*) and the villian, albeit scary, doesn't take up much room in the story. I would have liked for a bit more action, but I did enjoy the sweet fluffiness mixed in with the geeky badassery of the book. Cross is a great writer, who writes sass without it being the whole character and gives her people their own personal flare. I am so looking forward to the next book! The coming pairings have been hinted about and I look forward to all of the sisters' stories (especially one sexy vamp).
(Something I usually don't care for, but works here: there is sex without condom, but before this there's a brief talk of both contraception and disease and there is a wolfish reason. There's also talk about forceful sex and fucking and such, but the author is always making sure we know that all is consensual)
